Stay in TOTAL serenity in this Nationally Registered Historical Home nestled in the charming streets of Onancock.
Built in 1883 for the late Captain John T. Rodgers.
Captain Rodgers happened to meet his untimely death just two years later, in 1885, after being knocked overboard his schooner boat, the Neptune.
Captain Rodgers remains were discovered a week after the drowning where they where then laid to rest at an unknown location.
Captain Rodgers was only 35 years young and had never been married nor had children when he departed this world.
He was said to be greatly deplored on the Eastern Shore.
Conscientious in the discharge of all of his duties, and honorable in all his dealings.
He had the confidence and respect of all who knew him.
Captain Rodgers was a joint owner of the Neptune with J. M. Fosque-
whom also drowned a few weeks prior to Capt. Rodgers!
Its no wonder why Capt. Rodgers wanted to build his home in the bustling town of Onancock- once named by the Algonquin Tribe, Auwannaku, for Foggy Place.
Here, he owned 7 acres of land that is described as a "beautiful waterfront on Onancock and Leatherbury creek".
Serenity manor still features its original chandelier from 1883 in the foyer as well as all 8 fireplaces!
You can find an article describing the property in 1916 in a "for Sale" listing below.
The listing has the late owner named as W. M. Rodgers- Captain Rodgers brother.
Fast forward to 2024 - the 7 acres has now all been parted out and sold, with an exception of 1.6 acres and the residence now features a small, one bedroom ranch-style addition that can be rented separately!
Onancock was explored by Captain John Smith in 1608 and charted in 1680.
The town was incorporated in 1880.
Remaining one of Virginias oldest towns to present day.
